Processor & Motherboard
At the heart of the Reactor is nVidia's 680i SLI motherboard and either Intel's E8400 Core 2 Duo processor (one of the latest Wolfdale/Penryn series), or the Q6600 Core 2 Quad. The price is the same, and either one is an excellent choice. The E8400 is overclocked by more than 30% to 4.0 GHz, and most of today's games will run slightly faster on it, but we predict that by late 2009, it will be common for games to take advantage of those extra processor cores, at which point the Q6600 (overclocked to 3.2 GHz) may often outperform the E8400 for gaming.
Graphics Card
nVidia's 8800-series are the current undisputed champions in the graphics card race. Of these, the GeForce 8800 GTX and the 8800 Ultra are the top two models. Either card is a fine choice, allowing any game to flow across large monitors like silk on the breeze. By default, we configure the Reactor with the GTX version, to give you a single-card upgrade option. We overclock the GPU, shader, and video memory speeds, which has a noticeable real-world increase in gaming performance. The Reactor can use two overclocked graphics cards in SLI mode, giving you a two-card upgrade option as well.
Memory
If you're serious about gaming, 2 gigabytes of memory is almost a requirement, especially if you choose Windows Vista, and 2 GB is the default amount on each Reactor we sell. For the Reactor, we have chosen high-performance DDR2-800 memory from Corsair. By default, these are the higher-performance XMS2 Dominator chips. You may want to consider choosing the regular XMS2 chips when you configure your PC on our web store if you want to have 4GB of memory AND two free slots for future upgrades. While we do offer upgrades to 4 GB and 8 GB of memory, it is important to bear in mind that only 64-bit Windows (XP or Vista) will allow you to fully use those extra amounts.
Power Supply
Often overlooked as a secondary component, the reliability of a computer's power supply is just as important as any other part of a gaming PC. The Reactor can operate in SLI mode if you choose to add a second graphics card. To give you this option without requiring you to replace the power supply down the road, the Reactor comes slightly overpowered, with an ultra-reliable Cooler Master Real Power Pro 850-watt unit. Even if you add more memory, hard drives, and a second 8800 graphics card, the Cooler Master unit will keep your Reactor well fed. A 1000-watt version is used if you order a Reactor with one or two 8800 Ultra cards.
